Andras: Complete Demon Profile

Andras is one of the more enigmatic demons described in Ars Goetia:

He is a Great Marquis, appearing in the Form of an Angel with a Head like a Black Night Raven, riding upon a strong Black Wolf, and having a Sharp and Bright Sword flourished aloft in his hand. His Office is to sow Discords. If the Exorcist have not a care, he will slay both him and his fellows. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits.

While most of the 72 demons are portrayed as very benevolent, at least towards the summoner, we are met with a very stern warning about Andras. We also see that he has only one power, which is to sow discords. In other words, to do things which cause distrust among one another, which results in arguments and fights.

The Dangers of Evoking Andras

We’re dealing with a demon that is akin to a blade without a handle. If you don’t hold it carefully you are likely to cut yourself as you thrust it into your enemy’s guts.

For this reason, Andras is not a demon you would experiment with as a beginner. You should have at least a couple of successful evocations under your belt before proceeding.

Summoning Andras is essentially a black magic ritual, since the purpose is to cause chaos in the lives of others. I will not moralize about it, because sometimes black magic is justified.

Andras is most commonly summoned by diplomats and foreign agents because sowing discord among their enemies/competitors is their job.

Why Foreign Agents Perform Andras Rituals

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that diplomats and spies are often practicing magicians. After all, John Dee, the famous magician in the court of Queen Elizabeth was the original 007.

Diplomatic immunity allows diplomats to transport various ritual items across borders without being searched. They can then easily conduct rituals in the vicinity of their targets, thus maximizing the efficiency of their rituals and maintaining the ritual setup long enough to get the desired result from Andras (as you’ll soon find out).

Spies on the other hand, work in secrecy to begin with. If they’re any good, they’re not constrained by their public image or profession in a significant way, making their occult activities even easier to conceal.

How to Protect Yourself When Evoking Andras

So let’s get back to the inherent danger of working with Andras and what protection can be used. What does the author mean by his warning: If the Exorcist have not a care, he will slay both him and his fellows

How can we prevent this uncomely fate, should we still decide to summon Andras to target our enemies? It is done by keeping the ritual space intact until we’ve gained the desired result. I repeat, you must keep the ritual setup intact until Andras has done his bidding.

Unlike other demons, who you can summon and send on their way, then immediately end the ritual, with Andras the ritual technically continues for as long as he’s active. He is like a bolt of negative energy that receives its power from the proper, geometrical placement of specific ritual items, or energetic beacons if you will.

After this bolt has been sufficiently charged and made active, it has to explode somewhere. If you mess with the ritual space before that moment, the explosion will happen right then and there. Instead of sowing discords, it can cause untimely death instead due to the magician’s physical proximity to the ritual setup which is acting as Andras’ source of energy.

On the Magic Circle

It’s also very important that Andras is not constrained within a circle or a triangle. He has to be allowed to roam freely. So the circle is created to generate the energy needed for the summoning, but its southern side is left open.

Some, traditionally minded practitioners might argue that this leaves the magician exposed to the demon’s influence, which as we’ve seen is quite malevolent by nature. This is prevented by wearing his seal until the ritual’s complete.

Motivations Behind Working With Andras

So why do magicians sometimes resort to working with Andras instead of one of the other demons of revenge, who aren’t as dangerous to them? It is mainly because Andras is very potent and his influence moves fast.

In times of crisis, especially during war, it can be impossible to harm a head of state or his inner circle in any other way but through ritual means. Causing harm to one person could lead to a replacement who could be just as dangerous, if not more so.

Therefore, the ideal strategy is to cause discord, infighting which neutralizes many figures at once. A diplomat or a spy who can get close enough (and proximity is important with this ritual) can be an invaluable asset to his country or even a corporation.

Now, do I believe that modern diplomats and spies are performing this ritual? Not all of them, of course. A diplomat or a spy is not necessarily an accomplished magician. But are there some fighting for great countries such as the US, Russia and China who are using these means to further their agendas? You can answer that for yourself.

I will share instructions for a specific Andras ritual in the near future.
