Archangel Michael is one of the most formidable angelic powers to call upon for protection, courage, victory and defense against hostile spiritual forces.
Most prayers to Michael found today are written from a Christian devotional perspective. That is not the approach I use here. I work with angels as a magician and practitioner, much as I work with other classes of spirits: through preparation, respect, direct address and a clearly stated purpose.
You do not need to be Christian to approach Michael. His presence reaches far beyond modern church devotion, and his name has occupied an important place in Western magical tradition for centuries.
In the Book of Daniel, Michael appears as one of the “chief princes” who intervenes in a conflict involving spiritual powers. Revelation portrays Michael leading his angels into battle against the dragon, while Jude explicitly calls him an archangel.
Michael also appears in ceremonial magic. The Heptameron names Michael among the angels associated with Sunday, while the Key of Solomon calls upon Michael directly within ritual operations.
For the magician, this makes Michael particularly suited to workings involving defense, the destruction of hostile influences, courage under pressure and victory when opposition must be overcome.
How I Pray to Archangel Michael
Prayer does not need to be passive. When I pray to a spirit, I treat the prayer itself as a magical act. I establish the purpose of the working, create a suitable atmosphere and address the spirit deliberately rather than simply reciting words.
For a simple Michael working, I favor Sunday when practical. I light a candle, burn frankincense and spend a few moments becoming mentally still before addressing him. Gold, red or strong solar imagery works well for this type of practice.
None of that is required if circumstances demand an immediate prayer. Michael can be addressed directly and without elaborate preparation. Speak the prayer aloud if possible, concentrate on the situation you are asking him to influence, and avoid rushing through the words.

This prayer is suited to periods of spiritual pressure, oppressive atmospheres, unwanted spirit activity or persistent hostile influence.

Use when you suspect unwanted spiritual interference or an oppressive presence.
Michael, great Archangel and conqueror of hostile powers, hear me.
Enter this place with force.
Drive away every presence that has entered without invitation. Break every influence that feeds upon fear, confusion, weakness or disorder.
Where something clings to me, sever it.
Where something watches me with hostile intent, expose it.
Where something has been sent against me, turn it away from my path and close the road by which it came.
Let your presence fill this space until nothing hostile can remain concealed within it.
Michael, establish your authority around me and let no unwanted spirit cross the boundary you defend.

Guard every threshold and every room.
Let hostility remain outside these walls. Let malice directed toward those who live here lose its force before reaching us.
Drive away oppressive presences, lingering influences and anything that has no rightful place within this home.
Let those who enter with good intent find peace here.
Let those who enter with harmful intent find their power weakened.
Stand watch over this dwelling during the day and through the hours of darkness.
Protect those who sleep beneath this roof and let this house remain a place of strength rather than vulnerability.

Michael is particularly useful when protection and clarity are needed before evocation, spirit communication or other forms of ritual work.

The Traditional Prayer to Saint Michael
The most famous modern prayer to Michael comes from Catholic tradition and is associated with Pope Leo XIII in the late nineteenth century. Its opening appeal, “Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,” captures the protective and martial role for which Michael became famous in popular devotion.
I have no objection to traditional religious prayers where they suit the practitioner. But they are not the only way to approach Michael.
A magician can address Michael directly without pretending to hold beliefs he does not actually possess. What matters is that the contact is approached seriously and that the prayer has purpose behind it.
That is how I use the prayers above.
What Can You Ask Archangel Michael For?
Michael is most naturally approached when strength must meet resistance. I would particularly consider working with him for protection from hostile spiritual influences, courage during difficult periods, defense against enemies, victory in conflict, guarding the home, strengthening ritual space and breaking through fear when decisive action is required.
His appearance throughout religious literature and Western ceremonial magic makes him one of the clearest bridges between angelic devotion and practical magical work.
If you are accustomed primarily to working with demons or other spirits, angelic work can feel different in tone without being fundamentally alien. The essential principle remains the same: know whom you are addressing, approach with purpose and make your request clear.
Michael is not an angel I would approach timidly.
I would approach him when something must be defended, confronted or overcome.
