Archangel Raphael is one of the great angelic powers of healing, restoration and safe passage. I approach him when something damaged needs to be restored, when strength has been depleted, when the body or mind is struggling to recover, or when protection is needed during a journey.
Raphael is especially interesting to the magician because his connection with healing is not merely a modern spiritual association. In the Book of Tobit, Raphael identifies himself as one of the seven angels who stand before the divine presence and states directly that he was sent to heal Tobit and Sarah.
Raphael also appears throughout Western ceremonial magic. The Heptameron lists Raphael among the angels of Wednesday, connecting him with a Mercurial current of intelligence, movement and communication that complements his better-known role as healer.
The prayers below are written from the perspective of magical practice rather than Christian devotion. I address Raphael as an angelic intelligence whose power can be called upon deliberately through prayer, concentration and ritual.
How I Pray to Archangel Raphael
Raphael can be approached very simply. When I want to give the prayer a more ceremonial form, I light a candle, burn frankincense or another clean aromatic incense, and place a glass of fresh water nearby. The water can remain on the altar during the prayer and be poured away afterward.
Wednesday is a fitting day when I am deliberately working with Raphael through his older ceremonial correspondences, although I do not consider timing mandatory. Healing work often needs to be done when it is needed rather than when a calendar says conditions are perfect.

Not every form of depletion begins in the physical body. Difficult ritual work, prolonged emotional strain and hostile environments can leave the practitioner feeling spiritually exhausted or disordered. This is one of the situations in which I find Raphael’s restorative current particularly appropriate.

Raphael is most naturally approached when something needs to be healed, restored, clarified or guided safely from one condition into another.
I would consider working with him for recovery from illness or exhaustion, support during healing, emotional restoration, safe travel, clearer understanding of a difficult health matter, spiritual cleansing and the restoration of strength after demanding magical work.
His role in the Book of Tobit is particularly revealing because Raphael does more than simply heal. He accompanies Tobias through a journey, gives practical instructions, confronts a harmful spirit and helps restore order to a family that has suffered greatly. Healing in this sense is not merely the removal of a symptom. It is the movement from disorder back toward wholeness.
That broader understanding is closer to how I approach Raphael in magical practice.
