Prayers to Archangel Uriel for Wisdom, Hidden Knowledge & Illumination
Archangel Uriel is an angel I would approach when the problem is not lack of strength, but lack of understanding.
Some situations resist us because we simply cannot see them clearly. There may be information missing, motives concealed from us, a decision whose consequences remain uncertain, or an occult subject that we understand intellectually without yet grasping at a deeper level. Uriel belongs naturally to this territory.
His association with wisdom and revelation is old. In the Book of Enoch, Uriel acts as a revealer of the hidden order of the heavens, explaining the movements of the sun, moon and stars to Enoch. In 2 Esdras, Uriel appears to Ezra as an angelic teacher, confronting his questions with riddles intended to force a deeper understanding.
This is the aspect of Uriel I find most useful in magical work: illumination that does not merely hand you an answer, but exposes the structure of the problem so that you can finally see what is actually happening.
The prayers below are written from that perspective. They are not Christian devotional prayers. They are prayers for a magician or practitioner who wishes to approach Uriel directly as an angelic intelligence of knowledge, revelation and clear perception.
When I Would Work With Uriel
I would consider Uriel when I need to understand something hidden, study difficult occult material, see through confusion, make an important decision or recognize a truth that I may be unconsciously avoiding.
He is also well suited to the point where study becomes practice. Knowledge is of little value to a magician if it remains a collection of words. The useful revelation is the one that changes how you perceive, decide or act.
A Simple Uriel Working
For this kind of prayer I prefer a quieter setup than I would use with Michael. Place the question, book, diagram, sigil or subject you are trying to understand in front of you. A single candle is enough. I often keep a notebook nearby because the useful result of this kind of work may arrive as an idea, connection or realization rather than a dramatic spiritual manifestation.
State the question before you begin. Be specific. “Give me wisdom” is much less useful than identifying exactly what you cannot understand.
Then call Uriel by name and speak the appropriate prayer slowly. When the prayer is finished, remain quiet for several minutes rather than immediately distracting yourself. If something occurs to you, write it down before judging it.

Uriel, angel of light and revealer of difficult things, illuminate my understanding.
I have reached the boundary of what I presently know.
Show me what my assumptions have concealed from me. Break apart the false picture I have formed and reveal the structure beneath it.
Where I have confused fear with intuition, separate them.
Where desire has distorted my judgment, make the distortion visible.
Where the answer requires knowledge I do not yet possess, guide me toward it.
Do not flatter my certainty. Correct it where it is wrong.
Give me the patience to understand what cannot be understood at a glance and the intelligence to recognize truth when it appears in an unfamiliar form.
Uriel, cast light upon this matter until I can see it clearly.
Prayer to Uriel for Hidden and Occult Knowledge
Uriel’s role in 1 Enoch is particularly appropriate here. He does not simply deliver a message. He reveals an ordered body of hidden knowledge concerning the workings of the heavens.

Archangel Uriel, bring light into the decision before me.
Show me what each road contains beyond its immediate appearance.
Reveal the cost I have underestimated and the opportunity I have failed to notice.
Make hidden motives visible, including my own.
Strip excitement from bad judgment and fear from good judgment.
If one path depends upon illusion, expose it before I commit myself to it.
If another requires courage but leads somewhere worthwhile, help me recognize the difference.

When I encounter complexity, give me patience.
When understanding finally arrives, fix the principle firmly enough that I can apply it rather than merely repeat it.

If I am deceiving myself, expose that also.

Later Western ceremonial traditions often associate Uriel, or Auriel, with the North and the element of Earth. I find that symbolism useful here because it expresses something important about wisdom: eventually it must descend from abstraction into action.

Uriel as an Angel of Revelation
What interests me most about Uriel is that the older material does not portray him as a dispenser of comforting answers.
In 2 Esdras, Ezra asks enormous questions about justice, suffering and the order of the world. Uriel does not simply satisfy him with an explanation. He challenges Ezra to recognize the limits of his own understanding before attempting to grasp greater mysteries.
Likewise, the Uriel of 1 Enoch reveals an ordered cosmos. The emphasis is on seeing how things actually work.
That makes him particularly suitable for a magician. Magical practice requires imagination, but it also requires discernment. It is very easy to mistake expectation for perception or symbolism for literal fact. Knowledge without judgment can make the practitioner more confused rather than less.
I therefore approach Uriel when I want illumination more than reassurance.
What Can You Ask Archangel Uriel For?
Uriel is particularly appropriate for occult study, difficult decisions, understanding hidden situations, discerning truth from deception, interpreting symbols, developing magical knowledge and turning abstract understanding into practical action.
You can also approach him before research, divination or contemplation when the goal is not simply to receive information, but to understand what that information actually means.
