How to Summon Dantalion: Sigil, Powers, Enn & Ritual

Dantalion is the seventy-first spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great and Mighty Duke commanding thirty-six legions. His traditional offices are among the most psychologically focused in the Goetia: he teaches arts and sciences, reveals the secret counsel of people, knows their thoughts and can change them, causes love, and shows the likeness of a person in vision regardless of distance.

That makes Dantalion far more than a “love demon.” I approach him as a spirit of mind, perception, emotional influence and hidden intent. If the real problem is understanding what another person thinks, changing the emotional balance of a relationship, or seeing the structure beneath a social situation, Dantalion is one of the clearest spirits to call.

Who Is Dantalion?

Dantalion appears in the Lesser Key of Solomon as the seventy-first spirit. He is described as a Great and Mighty Duke appearing in the form of a man with many faces, both male and female, while holding a book in his right hand.

The image is unusually appropriate to his office. The many faces reflect multiplicity of mind and perspective. The book fits his power over knowledge and the arts. The grimoire then gives the core of his work: he teaches arts and sciences, reveals the secret counsel of any person, knows the thoughts of men and women, can change those thoughts at will, causes love, and can show the likeness of any person by vision.

I read that as a coherent current centered on the interior world. Dantalion governs what people think, what they conceal, how they feel, and how those hidden processes can be influenced or revealed.

Dantalion’s Sigil

Dantalion’s seal is the main visual link I use during both attunement and evocation. During a full ritual I place it in front of a black mirror or dark reflective surface. During shorter work, I gaze at it until the lines begin to soften and the symbol takes on the familiar charged quality that comes with sigil activation.

Dantalion’s Enn

The modern enn commonly used for Dantalion is:

Avage ayer Dantalion on ca.

This formula belongs to modern demonolatry rather than the older Goetic manuscripts. I still use it because it functions well as an attunement chant. Its purpose is to hold attention on Dantalion long enough for ordinary thought to quiet and ritual perception to take over.

I do not treat endless repetition as the ritual itself. Once the sigil feels active and the atmosphere changes, I stop the enn and move into direct invocation.

Dantalion for Love and Relationships

Dantalion’s power to cause love is explicitly part of the old description, but I find his relationship work most effective when combined with his power over thoughts and secret counsel. Love rarely exists in isolation from interpretation, memory, resentment and expectation.

That makes Dantalion especially useful when the problem is not simply lack of attraction, but a distorted emotional pattern between two people. He can be approached to soften hostility, alter how someone interprets the past, make a person more receptive to contact or shift the inner narrative that is sustaining distance.

If the goal is crude lust alone, there are spirits better suited to that current. Dantalion becomes interesting when emotion and mind are entangled.

Dantalion for Influence and Persuasion

The grimoire states that Dantalion can change the thoughts of men and women. I read that office as influence over interpretation and judgment. In practical work, this can mean changing how someone frames a situation, reducing resistance, making a proposal seem more reasonable or altering the emotional context around a decision.

I do not treat this as a theatrical “mind control” mechanism. The more useful approach is to define the shift you want: from suspicion to openness, from indifference to interest, from anger to reflection, or from resistance to willingness to negotiate.

Dantalion for Hidden Thoughts and Secret Counsel

This is one of Dantalion’s strongest offices and one of the reasons I consider him useful beyond love work. If you need to understand what someone is really thinking, what they are hiding, or which private concern is shaping their behavior, Dantalion is directly suited to that task.

I prefer combining this work with scrying or automatic writing. Establish contact first, ask one precise question, then allow the answer to emerge through image, phrase or impression rather than forcing a narrative too quickly.

Dantalion for Learning and the Arts

Dantalion is also explicitly a teacher of arts and sciences. This power is often ignored because his influence over thoughts and love attracts more attention, but it gives him a broader intellectual office.

I would use him for creative work, understanding difficult material, improving artistic perception or learning subjects where insight matters more than rote memorization. For pure disciplined study, other spirits may be more specialized, but Dantalion is especially interesting when the subject involves psychology, aesthetics, language, persuasion or human behavior.

Offerings to Dantalion

The older grimoires do not prescribe a fixed offering list for Dantalion, so I prefer offerings that reflect his offices rather than pretending one item is universally mandatory.

Red wine, fragrant incense, written praise, a book connected to the subject being studied, or a mirror used in the rite can all serve well. For relationship work, rose or sandalwood incense fits the emotional tone. For divination and hidden-thought work, myrrh or frankincense produces a more sober atmosphere.

If I am using Dantalion for a specific person, I keep the offering separate from the personal link. The offering is for the spirit. The personal link is there to define the target of the operation.

Attuning to Dantalion

For a short attunement, place Dantalion’s sigil in front of a black mirror and light one candle. Enter a light trance, gaze at the seal and repeat Avage ayer Dantalion on ca until your attention becomes absorbed in the symbol.

Then stop chanting and remain silent. Let images, emotions or fragments of language arise without immediately deciding what they mean. The purpose of attunement is recognition. You are learning the characteristic feel of Dantalion’s current before making larger requests.

How to Summon Dantalion: The Mirror of Many Faces

This ritual is built around Dantalion’s actual Goetic offices: thoughts, secret counsel, love, vision and the inner world of another person.

Prepare the Working

Place a black mirror at the back of the altar. Put Dantalion’s sigil directly in front of it. Set one deep red candle to the left and one black or dark purple candle to the right. The red candle governs emotion and attraction. The darker candle governs hidden thought, secrecy and inner perception.

Burn myrrh with a smaller amount of rose or sandalwood. If the operation is purely about hidden motives rather than love, leave out the sweeter incense.

Place one symbolic object connected to the person or situation near the sigil. This can be a name, photograph, letter or another personal link. Keep the altar restrained. Dantalion’s work is mental and perceptual, so clutter works against the atmosphere.

Open the Circle

Stand within the circle with the athame. Trace the boundary once and state that the space is established for clear contact, truthful perception and controlled influence.

Face the sigil and begin Dantalion’s enn:

Continue until the sigil begins to feel active and the mirror seems deeper than its ordinary surface. Then stop chanting.

Call Dantalion

Raise the athame toward the manifestation point and speak:

Dantalion, Great Duke of many faces and keeper of hidden counsel, I call you by your seal and by your name. Come into this place in a form I can perceive and understand. Open what is concealed. Reveal the mind beneath the words. Bring clarity where emotion has confused judgment, and movement where thought has become fixed.

Trace the sigil once in the air above the mirror, then lower the athame and remain silent.

State the Objective

Tell Dantalion exactly what the operation is meant to change or reveal. If the goal is insight, ask one question about the person’s real motive or private position. If the goal is emotional influence, define the desired shift in plain language.

Avoid vague requests such as “make this person love me.” A stronger formulation describes the psychological movement you actually want: soften resentment, increase receptivity, revive affectionate memory, make honest communication easier, or shift interpretation of a past conflict.

The Mirror Working

Look into the mirror and allow the person’s image to form mentally. Do not force a detailed visual. Hold the sense of their presence while Dantalion’s sigil remains below the mirror.

Ask Dantalion to show the hidden structure of the situation. Then remain quiet long enough for an answer to appear. This may come as a mental image, a phrase, an emotion that feels foreign to your own immediate state, or a sudden understanding of the person’s logic.

If the goal is influence rather than revelation, move from observation into direction. State the thought or emotional frame you want strengthened. Keep it simple enough that it can be held clearly.

Seal the Influence

Take the personal link and pass it through the incense. Hold it above Dantalion’s sigil and state:

Dantalion, carry this influence into the mind and heart connected with this link. Let the hidden pattern change where change is required. Let thought turn toward the direction I have named, and let the result unfold through natural channels.

Return the link to the altar. Present the offering and thank Dantalion for the contact.

Close the Ritual

Give Dantalion license to depart from the formal ritual space while the work continues. Extinguish the darker candle first, then the red candle. Keep the sigil and personal link together until the operation has clearly moved.

Write down anything received through the mirror immediately. The value of a scrying answer often becomes clearer later, especially after you see how the other person’s behavior changes.

Signs of Contact With Dantalion

Dantalion’s presence often feels mentally crowded rather than physically heavy. Thoughts can accelerate, unfamiliar emotional tones may surface, or the mirror may seem to produce shifting faces or changes in expression.

Dreams may become more socially intense after the working, especially dreams involving conversations, repeated faces, books, mirrors or people saying things they would not normally admit while awake.

I pay more attention to repeated patterns than to one dramatic sensation. If the same symbolic language appears across ritual, dreams and later events, the contact is much easier to trust.

Dantalion and Other Spirits

Dantalion combines well with spirits whose powers handle a different part of the operation. Sitri can intensify lust and attraction when the emotional current needs more heat. Gremory can complement relationship work where affection, beauty and emotional connection matter.

For status or persuasion in professional situations, Orias can handle recognition and social positioning while Dantalion works on thought and interpretation.

Final Thoughts on Dantalion

Dantalion is one of the most psychologically sophisticated spirits in the Goetia. His powers make sense together because they all revolve around the interior world: knowledge, thought, emotion, hidden counsel and vision.

If the problem depends on what another person thinks, feels or conceals, Dantalion is often more appropriate than a spirit whose powers are limited to attraction alone. Work with a precise objective, give him a clear psychological direction, and use the mirror to understand the situation before trying to force it.
