Vapula: Powers, Sigil, Enn & How to Summon the Demon

Vapula, also written Naphula in older sources, is the sixtieth spirit of the Ars Goetia, a Great Duke who commands thirty-six legions. His office is unusually practical: he makes people skilled in handicrafts, mechanical arts, professions, philosophy and sciences contained in books.

That makes Vapula one of the best Goetic spirits for applied mastery. I do not approach him merely for “intelligence” or vague mental improvement. His current is much more useful when there is a specific craft, profession, technical discipline or body of knowledge that must be understood well enough to perform.

This distinction matters. Plenty of people can read about a subject. Vapula is more interesting when knowledge has to become competence. The engineer must solve the problem, the writer must produce the text, the programmer must make the system work, and the craftsman must develop hands that obey the mind.

Who Is Vapula?

Vapula appears in Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum and later in the Ars Goetia. Weyer lists Vapula as the fifty-ninth spirit, while the later Goetic arrangement places him at number sixty.

The older description is concise. Vapula is a great and strong Duke who appears as a lion with griffin wings. He makes a person subtle and excellent in mechanical arts, philosophy and sciences contained in books, and he rules thirty-six legions. The Goetic version preserves essentially the same core office.

That is already enough to build a serious practice around him. We do not need to invent extra ancient powers. Vapula’s office covers the entire bridge between theory and skilled execution.

Vapula, Naphula and the Question of Gender

Older grimoire texts use masculine language for Vapula. Modern practitioners sometimes experience or describe Vapula as feminine and use “she” or the title Duchess. I do not treat either modern manifestation as an excuse to rewrite the source material.

When discussing the historical spirit, I use the traditional title Duke Vapula. In ritual, I am more interested in the intelligence that answers through the seal than in forcing that intelligence into a fixed human gender.

The variant Naphula also appears in modern discussion and older transmission. If you encounter Naphula in a list of spirits, it generally refers to the same current.

What Does Vapula Look Like?

Vapula’s traditional appearance is a lion with griffin wings. It is one of the clearer Goetic forms because the symbolism fits the office almost perfectly.

The lion gives the image strength, confidence and command. The griffin wings suggest elevation beyond brute force into something more exact and intelligent. I read the combination as power disciplined by skill. Vapula is not raw inspiration. He is the force that makes inspiration technically competent.

I do not demand that every evocation produce a literal winged lion in the mirror. Spirits manifest through the symbolic language available to the magician. The grimoire image gives us a foundation, not a visual test that every contact must pass.

Vapula’s Powers

Traditional office How I use it in practice
Mechanical arts and handicrafts Engineering, repair, design, fabrication, programming, technical trades and any work where knowledge must become precise execution
Professions Developing competence inside a career, learning professional systems and becoming harder to replace through deeper skill
Philosophy Understanding principles, building coherent models and seeing why a system works rather than memorizing isolated facts
Sciences contained in books Serious study, technical reading, research, mathematics, medicine, coding, occult theory and other structured bodies of knowledge
Subtlety and skill Refining judgment, improving precision, recognizing mistakes and developing a more exact way of thinking and working

Vapula’s Sigil

Vapula’s seal belongs to the Goetic manuscript tradition. The Ars Goetia explicitly states that the character is to be worn as a lamen when the spirit is called.

I use the seal as the main ritual anchor. During attunement, it is the visual focus. During evocation, I place it inside the manifestation triangle before the black mirror. When the work concerns a profession or craft, I also place the actual tool of that profession near the seal so the request is materially defined.

The seal becomes more valuable with repeated use. A clean copy used for months of study and ritual develops far more personal weight than endlessly downloading new decorative versions from the internet.

Vapula’s Enn

A modern enn commonly used for Vapula is:

Renich secore Vapula typan.

This is not found in Weyer or the Ars Goetia. It belongs to modern demonolatry practice, where it is used as a chant of contact and attunement.

I use the enn because it is effective as a concentration device. I repeat it while looking at the seal until the mind stops jumping between unrelated thoughts and the ritual atmosphere becomes distinct. Once contact begins to form, I stop chanting and let the spirit answer through silence, scrying and direct impression.

Vapula for Study and Exams

Vapula is useful for academic work, but I would not reduce him to an “exam demon.” His strongest use is understanding a subject deeply enough that the examination becomes easier as a consequence.

I work with him when I need to absorb technical material, identify what I do not understand, organize a large field of information or develop enough familiarity that answers become fluid instead of memorized under pressure.

For an exam, I would ask Vapula to expose the weak parts of my preparation and sharpen the ability to apply what I already know. That is much more aligned with his old office than asking him to magically replace study. If you are deciding whether Vapula or another spirit fits the subject better, see my guide to the best demons for studying, exams and learning.

Vapula for Technical and Professional Mastery

This is where Vapula becomes exceptional. His office is not confined to abstract learning. Weyer uses language that can be translated as mechanical arts, engineering or skilled crafts. That places Vapula close to the workshop as much as the library.

I would call him for programming, design, mechanics, electronics, architecture, surgery, writing, music production, ritual craftsmanship or any profession where repeated practice produces increasingly precise judgment.

He is especially valuable when progress has stalled because the practitioner cannot see the technical flaw. Vapula can turn a vague sense of “I need to get better” into a much more uncomfortable and useful realization: this is the exact part of the skill you are avoiding because it exposes your weakness.

Vapula and Philosophy

The philosophy office is easy to overlook because mechanical skill sounds more practical. I think the two belong together.

Technique without understanding creates imitation. Philosophy asks what the system is doing and why. Vapula is therefore useful when someone has accumulated many procedures but lacks a coherent model connecting them.

This applies strongly to occult practice. A magician can collect dozens of rituals without understanding what trance, symbolism, timing, attention and spirit contact are actually doing inside those rituals. Vapula is excellent for forcing the practice back toward comprehension.

Offerings to Vapula

The old grimoires do not give a specific offering list for Vapula. Modern practitioners have developed their own correspondences, but I choose offerings according to his office rather than pretending one list is ancient law.

Offering Why I use it
A finished piece of skilled work The strongest offering when Vapula has helped develop a craft, design, text, program or technical solution
A dedicated professional tool Links the spirit directly with the skill being developed
Frankincense or storax Creates a clean, focused atmosphere suitable for intellectual and technical work
Strong coffee or tea Useful for recurring study-oriented devotional work
Written praise or a completed study milestone Makes progress itself part of the relationship rather than separating ritual from practice

I especially like offerings that prove the work became real. If Vapula helps me understand a difficult technique, finishing something with that technique is more meaningful than placing another random object on the altar.

Planetary and Elemental Correspondences I Use

The old Vapula entries do not tell us that Mercury, Gemini or Air are his fixed ancient correspondences. Those are later interpretive systems. The previous version of this article presented them too confidently.

I still use Mercury in Vapula work because it supports study, communication, analysis and technical intelligence. Wednesday and a Mercury planetary hour are therefore useful when I want to strengthen the intellectual side of the rite.

I do not use actual liquid mercury. It is toxic and unnecessary. A Mercury glyph, silver-colored metal, mirror or consecrated writing instrument gives the ritual all the symbolism it needs without bringing a hazardous substance into the room.

Air symbolism can also support some workings, especially writing, language and abstract analysis. For a mechanical or craft operation, however, I may deliberately introduce Earth through the actual tool, material or object being worked on. The objective decides the supporting current.

Crystals I Use With Vapula

Crystals are modern ritual tools here, not Goetic requirements. I use them when I want the altar to separate different functions of learning and mastery.

Fluorite supports organization and concentration. Clear quartz acts as the central amplifier of the working. Lapis lazuli fits ordered knowledge and intellectual depth. Obsidian is useful when the real purpose is to expose the weakness or blind spot preventing progress.

For a major ritual I arrange those stones around the tool or book connected with the skill. The crystal grid is not decoration. Each stone marks a different stage of the operation.

Attuning to Vapula

A short Vapula attunement should remain simple. Place the seal in front of a mirror, light one blue or yellow candle and burn frankincense.

Set the tool of the skill you want to develop beside the sigil. This might be a pen, keyboard, instrument part, technical drawing tool, book, chisel or another object actually used in the work.

Enter a light trance and repeat:

Renich secore Vapula typan.

When the seal begins to feel active, stop chanting. Pick up the tool and ask one question: What weakness in my present technique is costing me the most progress?

Stay silent and receive. Do not ask Vapula to “make you a master” in ten minutes. Attunement is there to establish the current and make the next stage of practice more intelligent.

How to Summon Vapula: The Workshop of the Winged Lion

This is the major Vapula operation I use for mastery of a serious skill, profession or technical discipline. It is not designed as a beginner candle spell. The ritual turns the working space into a symbolic workshop where knowledge is examined, defects are exposed, the tool of the craft is consecrated and the magician performs part of the actual skill under the spirit’s presence.

The goal is not merely to receive inspiration. The goal is to force knowledge into the hands.

Ritual Implements

You will need Vapula’s sigil, a black mirror, an athame, a wand or ritual staff, a bell, a Mercury glyph, a metal key, four candles, four crystals, a bowl of clean water, black cord, a notebook, an offering cup, a charcoal burner, and the actual tool or object connected to the skill being developed.

Use a yellow candle for Mercury and intellectual speed, a blue candle for ordered knowledge, a dark green candle for material skill and professional competence, and a white candle for precision and successful execution.

For the crystal field use fluorite, lapis lazuli, obsidian and clear quartz. Burn frankincense with storax and a small amount of sandalwood.

The most important ritual object is the tool of the craft. If the goal is writing, bring the pen or keyboard you actually use. If it is programming, use the machine on which you work. If it is art, bring the brush, stylus or instrument. If it is technical repair, use a safe representative tool from that trade.

Define the Skill Precisely

Before the ritual, write the skill at the top of one page in your notebook. Beneath it write the exact level you want to reach.

Do not write “become better at coding.” Write the actual competence: understand database architecture well enough to design reliable systems, become fluent in a particular language, learn to diagnose a certain type of fault, or develop control over a specific writing technique.

On the next page, write the biggest weakness you currently recognize. Leave the rest blank.

Construct the Workshop Circle

Mark a ritual circle with salt. Place the yellow candle in the east and the green candle in the west. The blue and white candles remain on the altar.

Before the circle, mark a manifestation triangle. Place the black mirror at the rear with Vapula’s sigil in front of it.

Put clear quartz in the center of the triangle. Place fluorite to the left, lapis to the right and obsidian at the point nearest you.

Set the Mercury glyph beneath the clear quartz. Mercury is supporting the intellectual current of the rite. Vapula remains the spirit being summoned.

Bind the Four Defects

Wrap black cord around the tool of the craft four times and tie four knots. Each knot represents a different obstacle: ignorance, bad habit, imprecision and wasted practice.

Place the bound tool on the altar beside the notebook.

The knots will be opened at separate stages of the ritual. Do not cut all of them at once.

Open the Workshop

Ring the bell once. Take the athame and make one clockwise circuit around the circle.

At the east, light the yellow candle and trace the Mercury glyph in the air. State that the mind is being opened to speed, analysis and exact understanding.

At the west, light the green candle. Hold the actual tool of the craft for a moment and state that knowledge must become material competence.

Return to the altar. Light the blue candle for depth of understanding, then the white candle for precision.

Consecrate the Key of Skill

Take the metal key and pass it through the incense. Touch it to fluorite, lapis, obsidian and finally clear quartz.

With each contact state one function: Order. Understanding. Correction. Mastery.

Place the key across Vapula’s sigil.

Open the First Knot: Ignorance

Take the bound tool and undo the first knot.

Speak:

What I do not know can be learned. What is hidden by ignorance has no right to remain invisible once I have chosen mastery.

Place the loosened section of cord beside the fluorite.

Call Vapula

Begin the enn while gazing at the sigil:

Renich secore Vapula typan.

Let the rhythm continue until the seal begins to shift in peripheral vision and the mirror loses its ordinary flatness. Then stop.

Raise the athame and trace Vapula’s seal once in the air above the triangle. Speak:

Vapula, Great Duke of the mechanical arts, philosophy and sciences, I call you into this workshop. Come through your seal and stand before the work I have chosen. Show me the difference between knowledge and mastery. Expose the weakness in my method, sharpen the intelligence that guides the hand, and teach me what must be practiced until skill becomes natural.

Lower the athame. Strike the floor once with the staff or wand, then remain silent until the presence stabilizes.

Open the Second Knot: Bad Habit

Pick up the tool and untie the second knot.

Read the weakness you wrote in the notebook. Ask Vapula whether that is actually the main defect or merely the defect you are already comfortable admitting.

Look into the black mirror. Let the answer emerge without forcing it.

If another weakness becomes clear, write it beneath the first. Place the second section of cord beside the obsidian.

The Diagnostic Working

Put the tool down and take the key from the sigil. Hold it in your dominant hand.

Ask:

Vapula, show me the single technical change that would produce the greatest improvement if I practiced it consistently.

Watch the mirror. The answer may come as a movement, diagram, phrase, memory of a mistake, or sudden understanding of a principle.

When the answer becomes clear enough to state, speak it aloud and write it in the notebook.

Open the Third Knot: Imprecision

Undo the third knot and place that section of cord beside the lapis lazuli.

Now perform a short piece of the actual skill inside the ritual.

If you are writing, write one paragraph. If you are drawing, execute one controlled study. If you are playing an instrument, perform a short technical exercise. If the skill involves a computer, complete a small safe task you can perform within the ritual space.

The important part is that this is real practice, not visualization. Vapula’s office concerns skill. The ritual therefore requires the magician to demonstrate the skill while the contact is active.

Afterward, look into the mirror and ask what was weak in the execution.

The Water of Correction

Place the bowl of water in front of you. Dip the tip of the athame into the water and draw one clockwise circle.

Speak the technical correction you received over the water. Remove the athame and wash your fingertips lightly in the bowl.

Then touch the tool of the craft.

The action marks the transition from abstract instruction into embodied repetition. It is not meant to replace practice after the ritual. It consecrates the practice that follows.

Open the Fourth Knot: Wasted Practice

Undo the final knot.

Ask Vapula:

What am I repeating that feels like practice but no longer makes me better?

This question is deliberately severe. Many people practice the parts they already perform well because competence feels rewarding. Mastery requires spending time where performance still breaks down.

Place the final section of cord into the bowl of water.

Build the Circuit of Mastery

Take the tool and move it through the crystal field in a deliberate circuit.

Touch it first to fluorite and name the structure of the skill. Touch it to obsidian and name the weakness that must be exposed. Touch it to lapis and name the principle you need to understand. Touch it finally to clear quartz and state the level of competence you intend to build.

Pass the tool through the incense after the final contact.

Seal the Tool

Place the tool across Vapula’s sigil and lay the metal key over it.

Speak:

Vapula, let this tool remember the standard I have chosen. Let the hand grow more exact, the mind more subtle, and practice less wasteful. I ask not for effortless talent. I ask for the path by which ability becomes mastery.

Leave the tool there while you prepare the offering.

Offer and Receive the Lesson

Present the offering. If the offering is coffee or tea, pour it into the cup now. If it is a finished work, state what you will complete and dedicate once the next measurable level of skill has been reached.

Ask Vapula one final question:

What should I practice first when this ritual is over?

Receive the answer without adding more questions. Ring the bell once when the communication feels complete.

Close the Workshop

Thank Vapula directly and give him license to depart from the formal ritual space while the training current remains active.

Extinguish the dark green candle first, then yellow, blue and white. Remove the crystals from the triangle and place the key with the tool of the craft.

Dry the black cord after the ritual and discard or store it away from the working tool. Do not retie it around the tool.

For the next twenty-one days, use the consecrated tool during deliberate practice and keep a record of the specific weakness Vapula identified. The rite opens the workshop. Repetition is what builds the craft.

Signs of Contact With Vapula

Vapula’s presence tends to become obvious through concentration rather than spectacle. I pay attention to sudden technical insight, an unusually sharp awareness of flaws, the urge to reorganize a method, and the feeling that a difficult subject has become structurally simpler.

Dreams may involve workshops, wings, tools, machinery, books or repeated attempts to perform one action correctly. I take repeated symbolic patterns more seriously than one dramatic sensation during the first session.

Working With Vapula Long Term

Vapula is well suited to long-term work because mastery is inherently cumulative. I would rather maintain contact through months of serious practice than call him once for an exam and never return.

Keep one seal, one notebook and one principal tool connected with the work. Record what you practiced, what failed and what improved. When a major threshold is reached, make a deliberate offering tied to the achievement.

This creates a relationship built around actual competence rather than repeated requests for motivation.

Vapula and Other Demons

King Paimon works well when the subject requires broader authority, arts or secret knowledge in addition to skill. Furcas complements Vapula when philosophy, logic and disciplined intellectual training matter more than mechanical execution.

Astaroth is stronger when the problem is hidden knowledge or understanding a difficult body of information. Vapula becomes the better choice when the knowledge must become practiced ability.

I do not stack several spirits merely to make a ritual look more powerful. If I combine them, each receives a separate office inside the larger operation.

Final Thoughts on Vapula

Vapula is one of the most practical spirits in the Goetia because his office points directly toward competence. He teaches what can be learned from books, but he also governs mechanical arts and professions, where reading alone is never enough.

That is why I approach him as the Duke of the workshop as much as the library. The magician brings the book, the tool and the weakness. Vapula brings the intelligence that shows where practice must become sharper.

If you want a Vapula working performed on your behalf, you can hire me to perform a custom ritual using a full ceremonial setup built around the specific skill, profession, technical discipline or course of study you want to master.
