Yemayá Rituals: Beach, Candle & Full Moon (Step-by-Step)

Looking for Yemayá beach ritual, Yemayá candle ritual, or a Yemayá full moon ritual to obtain assistance from the oceanic goddess? Below are three complete workings designed for devotional practitioners. Two are elaborate outdoor rites and one is a simpler, home-friendly candle rite.

While praying to Yemaya can also yield some results, summoning her presence is a more powerful option. So be sure to utilize these instructions if you’re in need of strong results from her, or hire me to perform a focused ritual on your behalf.

Before You Begin (Applies to All Three Rituals)

  • Sacred Associations: Colors – blue & white; Number – 7; Element – ocean; Titles – Mother Yemayá, Queen of the Sea, Mother of Fishes.
  • Offerings (devotional-safe): White or blue flowers, watermelon, coconuts, sea salt, sweet fruits, fresh water, perfume/Florida Water (used on yourself/altar, not poured into the sea).
  • Chant/Invocation (optional):
“Yemayá, Mother of the Ocean, I honor you.
Great Queen of the Waters, receive my prayer.
Cover me with your waves; bless me with your love.
    Ashe.”

Ritual 1: Yemayá Beach Ritual (Outdoors—Cleansing & Blessing)

Best for: Deep cleansing, emotional reset, blessing new cycles.
Timing: Dawn or dusk; Saturdays are traditional; high tide if possible.
Duration: 45–60 minutes.

Materials

  • Blue or white cloth (altar base)
  • 1 blue candle (in a wind-safe lantern) or LED candle
  • 7 white flowers (e.g., roses)
  • Small bowl or jar for shore water (collected respectfully)
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • Florida Water or a light perfume (for personal cleansing, not poured into the sea)
  • Paper & pen (for petitions)

Setup

  1. Choose a quiet stretch of beach. Face the ocean. Lay the cloth and place the lantern (unlit), bowl/jar, flowers, and petitions on it.
  2. Cleanse hands and face with a few drops of Florida Water/perfume. Breathe slowly for seven counts, seven times.
  3. Draw a small seven-point path in the sand (seven short lines fanning toward the sea). This symbolizes seven open roads to Yemayá.

Steps

  1. Opening & Greeting (3–5 min)
    • Light the candle in its lantern.
    • Say: “Mother Yemayá, I come clean and sincere. As these waves cleanse the shore, cleanse my life. Ashe.”
    • Offer a pinch of sea salt into your shore water bowl, swirl clockwise 7 times.
  2. Petition Writing (5–10 min)
    • On paper write up to three petitions (one per slip): what you ask to be cleansed, what you ask to be blessed, and one specific goal.
    • Fold each toward you for blessings (or away for release). Hold them to your heart for seven breaths.
  3. Seven Waves Cleansing (10 min)
    • Walk to where waves touch your feet (never turn your back on the sea; watch the water).
    • With each of seven incoming waves:
      • Touch the water with your right hand, then touch brow, heart, and both shoulders.
      • Whisper: “Yemayá, cleanse me.”
    • After the seventh wave, sprinkle a little shore water over your crown (or shoulders) saying: “Ashe.”
  4. Flower Offering & Prayer (10 min)
    • Return to the altar. Hold each flower and speak one line of thanks or hope. Example lines: peace, courage, right work, loyal love, health, protection, open roads.
    • Walk to the waterline and gently place the flowers so a small wave can take them. If they wash back, collect and try once more, then bring them home to compost.
  5. Blessing Yourself (5 min)
    • Dip fingers in the shore water bowl. Trace a small spiral clockwise on your brow and heart: “Mother Yemayá, bless me and make my path smooth.”
    • Touch the petitions with damp fingers.
  6. Release or Keep Petitions (3 min)
    • For release, let the wave touch the petition briefly, then collect it and take it home for respectful disposal (burn to ash, bury, or tear and compost).
    • For blessings to grow, keep the petition under a water bowl on your altar for 7 days.
  7. Closing (3 min)
    • Thank Yemayá out loud. Extinguish the candle.
    • Erase any sand marks. Pack out everything you brought.

Signs & Omens

  • Gentle breeze, sudden calm, a “pull” to look at a certain horizon point, or finding a whole shell can be affirmations. Feeling lighter or unexpectedly emotional is normal and common as well.

Ritual 2: Yemayá Candle Ritual at Home (For Protection & Harmony)

Best for: Ongoing protection, sweetening the home, steady emotional harmony.
Timing: Any evening; Saturdays preferred; 7-day cycles are traditional.
Duration: 25–35 minutes (plus 7-day follow-through).

Materials

  • 1 blue 7-day glass candle (or a plain blue candle in a safe holder)
  • Heat-safe dish with fresh water (add a pinch of sea salt)
  • Blue/white cloth, a few seashells, white flowers (optional)
  • A small mirror (fits under the water bowl)
  • Blue paper & pen (petition)
  • Florida water or light perfume (for personal aura)

Setup

  1. On a stable surface, lay the cloth. Place the mirror flat, then the water dish on top (invites reflection & clarity).
  2. Arrange shells/flowers around the dish. Put the candle to the right of the bowl.

Steps

  1. Cleanse & Center (3 min)
    • Dab a little Florida Water/perfume on wrists and behind neck.
    • Breathe in 7 counts, hold 2, out 7 counts and repeat three times.
  2. Prepare Petition (5 min)
    • Write a concise request: “Protect and harmonize my home; keep envy and strife away; let peace, health, and prosperity grow.”
    • Fold toward you three times for attraction. Place the petition under the mirror (or under the bowl if no mirror).
  3. Light & Call (3 min)
    • Light the blue candle. Hold both hands over the water (palms down):
“Yemayá, Mother of the Waters, bless this home.
Make this water a veil of peace, a mirror of truth,
and a shield against all harm. Ashe.”
  4. Seven-Breath Wave (3–5 min)
    • With each slow breath out, trace a tiny clockwise circle over the water with your index finger—seven times. Imagine soft blue light filling the room.
  5. Seal the Home (7 min)
    • Dip two fingers in the water. At your front door, trace a small circle at handle height: “Bless this threshold.”
    • Repeat for windows/doors that you feel need sealing (optional). Return remaining water to the bowl.
  6. Sit & Listen (5 min)
    • Sit quietly, gaze at the candle’s flame reflecting in the water. If you receive a word/image, note it after the rite.
  7. Close & Maintain
    • Let the candle burn a little each evening for 7 nights (extinguish safely; don’t blow if you prefer use a snuffer or lid).
    • On the 7th night, thank Yemayá. Pour the water at the base of a healthy plant (or into running water). Keep the petition under the bowl or burn it and scatter ashes in soil.

Optional Upgrades

  • Add a pinch of sugar to the water for “sweetening” (do not pour sugary water into natural waterways; use plant soil).
  • Place a small silver coin under the bowl for prosperity.

Ritual 3: Yemayá Full Moon Ritual (Outdoors – Renewal, Abundance & Guidance)

Best for: Big resets, drawing abundance, receiving guidance under lunar power.
Timing: Night of the Full Moon (or the night before/after); near the sea or a large natural body of water.
Duration: ~60–75 minutes.

Materials

  • Blue/white shawl or large cloth (working space)
  • 7 tealights in wind-safe lanterns (or 1 protected pillar)
  • 7 small stones (to anchor cloth/corners)
  • Bowl of fresh water + pinch of sea salt (for blessing)
  • 1 silver-colored bowl or polished metal plate (to catch moon reflection)
  • White flowers (7), fruit offering (small watermelon/coconut pieces)
  • Paper & pen (one petition per sheet)
  • White cotton ribbon or cord (for 7 knots)

Setup

  1. Lay the cloth with a clear view of the moon over water. Anchor corners with stones.
  2. Arrange lanterns at the perimeter like a crescent. Place the silver bowl/plate in the center where it can catch the moon’s reflection.
  3. Put the salt-water bowl to the right; flowers and fruit to the left.

Steps

  1. Lunar Greeting (5 min)
    • Stand, hold arms open to the water and moon:
“Mother Yemayá, bright moon upon your waters, I come to renew and receive. Ashe.”
    • Light the lanterns one by one, clockwise, speaking a single word at each (Peace, Health, Love, Work, Protection, Wisdom, Abundance).
  2. Moon-Mirror Blessing (8 min)
    • Pour a little fresh water into the silver bowl/plate until it reflects the moon.
    • Gently dip fingertips and anoint brow/heart with the moon-kissed water.
    • Say: “As the moon renews, so do I. As the ocean provides, so am I provided for.”
  3. Seven-Knots Cord (10–12 min)
    • Hold the white ribbon/cord. For each knot, speak one clear petition (examples: “Steady income,” “Healthy body,” “Peaceful mind,” “Protected home,” “Right partner,” “Open roads,” “Ancestral blessing”).
    • After each knot, breathe out slowly toward the water, “sending” the request across the surface.
  4. Petition Papers (10 min)
    • Write up to three petitions (one per paper). Fold toward you for attraction.
    • Place them briefly under the silver bowl so the moon reflection touches them.
  5. Flower & Fruit Offering (8–10 min)
    • Speak gratitude for what is already present in your life.
    • Gently offer flowers at the waterline. For fruit, place small pieces where the tide can briefly touch them—then collect what returns and pack it out (or leave fruit higher up for wildlife if it’s allowed in your area).
  6. Listening & Divination (8–12 min)
    • Sit quietly, watching the moon reflected in the silver bowl.
    • Optional: Shell Toss—toss three small shells (or pebbles) onto the cloth; note patterns (clustered = emphasis; line toward water = go forward; line away = reconsider). Record impressions.
  7. Seal & Close (5 min)
    • Wrap the 7-knots cord around your petition papers; keep them on your home altar for one lunar month.
    • Extinguish lanterns counter-clockwise, thanking Yemayá.
    • Erase footprints/marks if needed and pack out everything.

Aftercare

  • For one week, avoid harsh self-talk; hydrate more than usual; take a brief salt bath once (1 cup sea salt in warm water) to “set” the work.
  • After one lunar month, burn the petitions (safely) and bury the cooled ashes at the base of a healthy tree. Keep the 7-knots cord if results are unfolding; otherwise, unfasten knots one by one while thanking Yemayá, then release the cord to moving water away from wildlife or bury it.

Some Extra Tips

  • No ocean nearby? Use a large bowl of water on a balcony, by an open window, or visit a clean river/lake.
  • Windy conditions? Use enclosed lanterns or LED candles.
  • Can non-initiates do this? Yes, as devotional practices. If you belong to a house/terreiro, defer to your elders’ rules.
  • Signs from Yemayá: Dreams of water, shells, dolphins/fish motifs, calm during/after the rite, or unexpected help with family matters.

If you need to establish a stronger connection with Yemaya (or a different spirit), consider hiring me to perform an elaborate ceremonial ritual on your behalf. Summoning rituals are the best way to get an effective response from a spirit, and to get your needs met through divine, angelic or demonic intervention.
